New York guide
New York needs no introduction. It is world famous for all the right, and unfortunately more recently, all the wrong, reasons. It is a city with something for everyone who visits, whether it’s for a weekend break or a two week holiday. With so much on offer it’s would be hard to make a list of all the possible places and attractions one could visit, but below are some of the more popular.
Central Park is massive, a huge 843 acres crammed with sports grounds, playgrounds, fountains, nature conservation, a reservoir, fortifications, a walking and jogging track, gardens, sculptures and more besides.
The Empire State Building needs no introduction. Situated on 5th Avenue, it is the tallest building in New York, rising to an impressive 443 meters. The 86th floor observation deck allows you to view the entire city, and on a clear day you can see up to eighty miles away.
The Statue of Liberty is found, funnily enough, on Liberty Island, in New York Harbour. Standing 93 meters tall, it was a gift from France to the American people and can only be reached by boat.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located in Central Park and is a must for art lovers. The museum has over two million works of art from all over the world, in addition to American sculptures and paintings.
For the lovers of modern art, the aptly named Museum of Modern Art features drawings, paintings and sculptures but also includes architecture and design as well as photography, film and media.
A visit to Time Square would best be done at night, enabling you to observe the vast array of neon lights in their full glory. In the square you can find theatres, cinemas, restaurants, a multitude of clubs and great New York hotels.
New York is also well-known for its shopping, especially at Christmas time. Fifth Avenue is definitely the number one shopping spot in the whole of New York and all the big names and brands can be found here.
If you want to see a show, then it has to be Broadway. Contrary to popular belief, there are actually only four theatres on Broadway itself but plenty of others can be found in the surrounding area.
For a sobering finale to your New York visit, why not go and pay your respects at Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Centre disaster and a lasting memorial to the thousands of innocent people who lost their lives on that fateful day in 2001.
